Windsor is the garden gateway to Essex County, southern
Ontario and indeed, Canada. It has the unique attribute of being the most
southerly city in Canada. Windsor lies south of Detroit, Michigan, on
the same latitude as northern California and the French Riviera.

The area has many historic connections. Nearby Fort Malden was built
in 1796 as a replacement for the early Fort Detroit which the British
had to leave following the establishment of the boundaries of the new
United States of America. Ownership changed hands on several occasions
following the war of 1812 and the defeat of the British in the Battle
of Lake Erie. British possession was re-established following the peace
treaty of 1815.
Today Windsor and Detroit celebrate their unique relationship with the
International Freedom Festival, a two week long celebration held over
the holiday of Canada Day - July 1 and Independence Day - July 4. This
annual event is one of largest trans-border festivals in the world and
is highlighted by the Hudson's fireworks - the second largest display
in North America.

RECREATION
Windsor, Essex County and Pelee Island have an abundance of parks,
gardens and conservation areas. The jewel in Windsor's parks system lies
along the Detroit River. For 3.5 miles from the Ambassador Bridge to the
Canadian Club Distillery, there is green space and gardens. Within this
ribbon lies Dieppe Gardens, where the cruise ships dock while in port,
and the Sculpture Gardens. Windsor was recently recognized by the Sculpture
Society of Canada for publicly accessible art. The sculpture garden is
called a "museum without walls" and highlights works from artists the
world over.
Other natural highlights of the City include Ojibway Park, with its stand
of Carolinian forest and prairie grass, Coventry Gardens with the ever-changing
Peace Fountain and Jackson Park, home to over 12,000 rose bushes.
Scattered about the county are other gems such as Point Pelee National
Park, protected for its unique Carolinian forest and songbird migrations:
lovely Navy Yard Park and Holiday Beach Conservation Area. The area's
birdwatching opportunities are world renowned, encompassing the above
listed sites as well as other marshes, lagoons, ponds and alvars.
HISTORIC WINDSOR
Slightly beyond the area of Dieppe Park are the two
historic regions of the City - Olde Sandwich Towne and Old Walkerville.
Sandwich is the site of the original settlement in Windsor and is home
to Mackenzie Hall, which was built by Canada's second Prime Minister,
Alexander Mackenzie. Fully 60 buildings within a four block radius were
constructed prior to 1900. This history of Sandwich is colourfully illustrated
on area buildings in the form of lovely and vibrant murals.
Hiram Walker founded the Canadian Club Distillery on the shores of the
Detroit River in 1858. The town that grew around that enterprise became
known as Walkerville. Today, lovely architecture graces the area. Tours
are offered at the Distillery and also at Willistead Manor, the gracious
home Hiram Walker's son built at the turn of the century.
SHOPPING
In addition to all the amenities of a modern city,
Windsor offers specialty shopping in pleasant pedestrian environments:
Erie Street for a taste of Italy, Pelissier Street and Wyandotte Street
East for fine boutiques, and the Ottawa Street village for a pedestrian
shopping experience par excellence. Windsor's shopping exemplifies its
cultural diversity, and the sights and sounds of the many communities
that make up Canada's fabric are never far away. Windsor's multicultural
background is also well represented in an eclectic selection of fine restaurants.
In addition to street side shopping, outstanding opportunities exist
at Devonshire Mall, the Roundhouse Centre, University Mall and our new
premium outlet centre - Windsor Crossing.
ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT
The Arts are well represented in the Windsor Light
Opera and the Windsor Symphony. The University Players, Theatre Alive
and the Gina Lori Riley Dance Enterprises round out an active arts and
entertainment scene. Much of the Arts activity is centred at the Cleary
International Centre with a superb performing arts theatre as well as
convention, corporate and banquet facilities. In addition to the Cleary,
a number of productions take place at the historic and completely restored
Capitol Theatre.
Winter will see the opening of our new $26 million state-of-the-art Art
Gallery of Windsor. Located within walking distance of Dieppe Gardens,
the Gallery will focus on Canadian works and various travelling exhibitions.
Casino Windsor's new facility opened on the riverfront in 1998. Visitors
can tempt lady luck at a variety of table games and slot machines. Remember,
winnings are tax-free in Canada.

SPORTS
Windsor has one of the best all-weather harness racing
establishments in North America. In addition to wagering on the ponies,
visitors may also visit the Racetrack slots. There's guaranteed fun for
everyone.
Cyclists, walkers and rollerbladers can access either the Ganatchio Trail
or riverfront walkways in the City, or the Chrysler Canada Greenway throughout
the county.
For the golfer there are many excellent accessible courses in Essex County.
Windsor and neighbouring communities offer excellent charter fishing
either from the North Shore in Lake St. Clair or the South Shore on Lake
Erie. White and small mouth bass, walleye, yellow pickerel, freshwater
drum, yellow perch and muskie can all be had in season. Wheatley, for
example, is the centre for a major Lake Erie fishing fleet and is the
self-proclaimed fresh water fish capital of the world.
